Al-Anon and Alateen are self-help recovery programs for people who believe their lives may have been affected by someone else's drinking. We come together to find help and support in dealing with the effects of alcoholism on our lives. The single purpose of these programs is to help families and friends of alcoholics, whether the alcoholic is drinking or not.

Answers to the Frequenly Asked Questions

  1. What is the Al-Anon Newsletter?
  2. In Calgary, Al-Anon Information Services (AIS) publishes a monthly (except July and August) newsletter. It is for any Al-Anon member. It contains a list of the Al-Anon Information Services’ (AIS) Officers and Coordinators; Al-Anon announcements i.e. workshops, gratitude meetings, anniversary meetings, etc; AIS monthly Treasurer’s report; District Meeting Information; monitoring schedule for 2 months; changes/updates to the 12 Step Lists, and Institution (i.e. hospitals) meeting schedule, etc.

It is distributed at the monthly AIS meetings. Newsletters cost 20 cents each. It is common for groups to subscribe for a set number, which are distributed amongst the group. Purchases can be made at the meeting as well.

  3. How can I get a copy of the Al-Anon newsletter?
  4. Most individuals get a copy from their Alternate Group Representative at their regular Al-Anon meeting. If your group does not have an Alternate Group Representative you can attend the AIS meetings and get one, or more, directly. You can also contact the Newsletter Coordinator and discuss alternative arrangements. Due to anonymity you will have to get that contact information from someone who either attends, or is aware of, Al-Anon Information Services (AIS).
  5. What is a District Representative / District Rep / DR ?
  6. It is an Al-Anon member elected by the Group Representatives within the District. They have the same three year term as Group Representatives. They are a resource to the Group Representatives and groups within their Districts.
  7. What is a District?
  8. A District is a collection of groups within a loosely defined geographical area. All the Group Representatives from the groups within a District attend District Meetings. It can be compared to an Al-Anon meeting for Group Representatives. It allows Group Representatives to openly share their experience, strength, and hope from a Group Representative perspective. Although District Meetings are usually attended by Group Representatives they are open to anyone in the Al-Anon membership who wishes to observe, participate, and grow. Districts can decide to host special events as well i.e. workshops, speaker meetings, etc. Districts belong to an Area.
